View sales summary, sales trends and payment methods reports
- Account owners or team members with the reports permission to view limited reporting can view sales summary for the past 90 days in your point of sale app, including tips and top-selling items.
- Sellers with the reports permission to view detailed sales reporting can view full historical data, comparison charts, and trends in Square Dashboard.

About sales summary, sales trends, and payment methods reports
The sales summary report will show all important sales information in one place, including closed sales, partial payments, tips, and deposits, while making it easier for you to understand your business performance. You can print, export, or copy links to share with other key team members in your business.

Before you begin
Your sales summary reporting can be accessed from the Square Dashboard and the point of sale apps. Controls for metrics, locations, grouping and filters are accessible via the blade that opens from the right-hand side. Open this view by clicking on the controls at the top of the report. Metrics now also have definitions attached to them, helping you understand what any given metric means.
To view accurate sales data, consider the following:
Ensure all transactions have completed and synced.
The sales summary report only includes completed (closed) orders and does not include partial payments or deposits.
Sales summary numbers may differ from other reports (like Payments or Team Sales) due to different calculation methods and timing.
Sales data may take a few minutes to appear in your report.

Understand your metrics
Your sales summary is structured like a balance sheet, with the following sections:
- Product sales*: Item sales including modifiers and service charges.
- Items: All item sales excluding taxes, discounts, comps and refunds.
- Gross service charges: Service charges including auto gratuity, surcharges and other fees. Taxes and fees on service charges are added to taxes and fees.
- Discounts and comps: Deductions made to your sales due to returned sales, goodwill losses such as incorrect sales or discounts applied.
- Returns: All itemised refunds, excludes partial refunds, custom amounts refunds, taxes and discounts.
- Net total*: Total collected minus fees minus other withholdings.
- Net sales*: Gross sales minus returns minus discounts and comps.
- Taxes: Tax amounts applied at the time of sale.
- Gross sales: Net sales plus taxes.
- Tips: The total of voluntary gratuity added to the transaction by your customers. This excludes cash tips because they’re not recorded in the point of sale app.
- Gift card sales: All gift card activations adjusted for refunds and discounts.
- Refunds by amount: Partial refunds and specific dollar amount refunds not applied to an item.
- Cash rounding: Rounding adjustments made to your transactions.
- Total sales*: Net sales plus taxes, tips, gift card sales minus additional amount refunds.
- Fees: The amount of fees collected at the time of payment processing or service (excludes taxes).
- Square payment processing fees: The cumulative amount of fees charged over an indicated period of time which includes payment processing as well as other Square fees.
- Third-party fees: The fees charged by third-party integrations solely for the processing of payments.
- Tax on payment fees: Applicable taxes added to the fee amount.
- Free processing: The amount of fees reimbursed to your account if you participated in Square’s referral program or have been granted free processing.
- Total payments collected: The total amount received from customers, calculated as payments captured minus refunds captured.
- Discounts: Pre-tax discounts applied to a sale
- Comps: Comps applied to a sale
- Card surcharge: Service charge
- Fee adjustment: The total amount of adjustments to reflect the cost of processing transactions plus a fixed margin.
Metrics marked with * can be focused on in the report. Simply click the gauge (line) or bar icon next to the metric, then click Apply.
- Number of payments: The total number of payments taken.
- Payment amount: The total amount of money collected in payments
- Number of refunds: The total number of refunds processed
- Refund amount: The total amount of money refunded. Unlike the Returns field in the Sales Summary, this field takes taxes and discounts into account. This means that if taxes or discounts were applied to the payments being refunded, these will be considered in the total here.
- Total fees: The cumulative amount of fees charged over an indicated period of time which is calculated as: Initial fees + Tax on Fee - Free processing.
- Total collected: Payment amount - Refund amount
- Tips: The total of voluntary gratuity added to the transaction by your customers. This excludes cash tips because they’re not recorded in the Square app.
- Net total: Total collected minus fees minus other withholdings.
Option 1: View sales summary
Sales summary metrics allow you to customize your visuals to match your preferences and switch between different report types effortlessly. To do so from the Square Dashboard and point of sale app:
- Sign in to Square Dashboard and go to Reports > Sales summary.
- Use the date selector tool to refine a date range and select the relevant filters to view your report.
- Choose your metric to base your sales summary view on.
- Select (⋮) or select each filter to set your controls:
a. Report type: Choose to summarize by group, hour, or day. You can also set individual increments by hours, days, weeks, or months.
b. Locations: Select a location to only show data associated with the location you’ve created or select All locations.
c. View: Select the Gauge (Line) graph or Bar group view that best suits your data and preferences.
d. Group metric by: Groupings are used to organize and display your data within your report. You can select one grouping by none, location, device, device nickname, source, channel, or collected by.
d. Filter by: You can apply one or more filters to narrow the focus of your report. Choose between timeframe, channel, device, device nickname, source, or collected by.
- Open ≡ More in your point of sale app.
- Tap Reports > Sales and see today’s sales activity or tap a preset range to view sales for that time period. To set a custom date range, tap the date at the top of the report on your phone, or tap Compare on a tablet, and set your filters. You’re able to filter by time of day, device, and team member.
- Tap Done when finished.
By tapping the three dots (•••) > View in Dashboard under TOP ITEMS or TOP CATEGORIES, you can sign into your Square Dashboard to view the detailed reports using a web browser.
Option 2: View sales trends
Sales trends allow comparison of daily, weekly, and yearly gross and net sales. You can view and compare sales trends and average total sales from your Square Dashboard. The sales trends report is only available in your Square Dashboard.
Sign in to Square Dashboard and go to Reports > Sales > Sales trends.
Select the Locations to be included within your focus dates.
Click the preset dropdown options to compare two time periods or use the custom date selector tool to adjust the date range of your report.
Choose the relevant metrics: gross sales, average total sale, net sales, or order count.
Choose to view your report as a Line or Bar graph.
To include channels, click All Channels > Include channels not listed.
Option 3: View payment methods
Payment methods summarize total collected and any associated fees from credit, debit, gift cards, and other tender types, with breakdowns by debit vs credit, as well as by card brand. You can view payment methods from your Square Dashboard.
Sign in to Square Dashboard and go to Reports > Payments > Payment methods.
